Turning Plastic Waste Into Bricks

An inspiring story from East Africa where Nzambi Matee, founder of Gjenge Makers in Kenya, is recycling plastic waste into building bricks. Nzambi’s Company, Gjenge Makers, utilises a mechanical recycling process instead of chemical one.

The process involves sourcing, cleaning and shredding the waste. This is followed by a mixing stage where the waste is mixed with sand and glass. Finally, a hydraulic press pushes the waste into a variety of brick shapes depending on what is being built.

It is estimated that Gjenge recycles between 10 and 25 metric tonnes of plastic every week. Truely inspiring.
